The church was organized in 1757. During the American Revolution, the church was burned by the British Lieutenant-Colonel Banastre Tarleton. His act resulted in the citizens giving greater support to his opponent, the Continental General Francis Marion.&#13;
The rebuilt (and current) church building remained virtually unchanged from its erection in 1830 until the front porch was added in 1910.</text>
